Media Release - Microfilm Goes Digital!

Posted: Thursday, June 14, 2007

The recent acquisition of a Microfilm Scanner brings the latest in digital scanning technology to the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library. The Microfilm Scanner is connected to a laser printer and a PC. The three components can be used to view, print and save digital copies of documents from microfilm and microfiche. The Library has an extensive collection of documents stored on microfilm and microfiche including Canadian Census records, past issues of local newspapers, and other documents of significance to researchers, historians, genealogists and the general public.

On its own, the Microfilm scanner enables patrons to view microfilmed documents. In combination with the attached laser printer, patrons are able to print digitally scanned copies of documents. When used with the PC, the scanner sends a digital image of the document to the PC, which patrons can save in a variety of digital file formats to a CD or USB flash drive. Patrons can take the saved files away and access them on another computer and use photo editing software to improve or enhance the document images. The cost of printing remains the same at $0.25 per page. There is no charge to use the scanner to view or save digital copies of documents.

The Library received a generous donation from the recently disbanded Keppel Township Historical Society in order to assist with the purchase of the new Microfilm Scanner. “The Library is grateful to the Keppel Township Historical Society for their assistance to the Library so that we are able to offer this exciting option for accessing microfilm and microfiche” says Richard Sulkers, Deputy Chief Librarian.

Information Services Staff will be happy to demonstrate how to use the new Microfilm Scanner. Please stop by the Information Services desk on the main level to ask for instructions.
